Within three months of a cancer diagnosis, radiation and chemo, this 230 pound couch potato lost 80 pounds of fat, muscle and the will to live. Radiation did major damage to my jaw, saliva glands, taste buds, and inner ear. All I did was sleep and my only nourishment was Ensure, smoothies, broth, water and mashed potatoes. I couldn’t swallow or talk for several weeks. Walking was next to impossible as I had no balance. Depression set in.
In early 2018, I joined a program at the YMCA, but after it ended I struggled because my support team and new friends were no longer there on a regular basis. I heard about the Best Body Countdown, and through the encouragement of my team at the YMCA, I made it through the 52 days of the Countdown.
I lost inches, gained strength, endurance and confidence. My first plank was modified and lasted 14 seconds. At my final Best Body evaluation I did a 47 second FULL plank! I’ve started swimming lessons to strengthen my legs, and I can walk the dogs more than two miles with some effort. (I average 8,000-10,000 steps a day now!) My resting heart rate has dropped from 72 with medication to 58-60 WITHOUT. I’m off my diabetes medication and I am maintaining a great Glucose level. I smile more, enjoy life more, breathe easier, have more strength, energy and balance, and I’m sleeping better, too.
My self-esteem is returning, anxiety and depression are lessened. I’ve joined RESOLVE and hope to continue to use what I’ve learned during the Countdown.
