T’was the week before Christmas
when all through the house
There were goodies and treats
for umm….my kids and my spouse.
My gym-bag was set by the door with care,
in hopes that somehow I’d find myself there
But there’s wrapping paper all over my bed
and visions of to-do lists, running thru my head.
My kids – how they need me —
and the school, and the church!
Dress rehearsals, school parties, special services;
never mind work!
Now son, now daughter, now hubby (even cats)…
Hurry here! Hurry there! Want this! Want that!
To the top of the pantry! To to the top of the fridge!
Ahh! What will fix this? A good holiday binge!?
And then, amidst the hustle, I heard the Lord say,
“Let’s celebrate better – on this, my Birthday.”
As I drew in a breath and settled myself,
I remembered this season was about something else.
So the ads and shopping lists were all put away,
and the wine and the treats (this was hard, I must say!),
Then I heard Him exclaim, with distractions out of sight,
“The Prince of Peace came to all: Oh Holy Night.”
