I think of Memorial Day as the start of summer. Where we live, kids get out of school just in time for Memorial Day weekend – today is their last day in fact! On the last (half-day) of school I always love to go somewhere fun with my 3 kiddos so it stands out from every other after-school afternoon. This time, part of the fun will be special home-made popsicles: a sweet and simple start-of-summer fun.
Someone said to me recently, “Oh, you wouldn’t want this, because you’re against sweets.” What? Who ever said that? Sweets are some of my favorite splurges!
Now, if she meant I’m not a fan of dye-laden syrup-pops with 0% fruit, I would have to say that’s true. I want my strategically savored sweets to be wayyyy better than that! And if she meant I don’t want to be controlled by sugar cravings, I would say that is true as well (been there, done that).
But, strategically savoring something sweet is part of the joy of holidays for me. I aim to intentionally indulge in something sweet this weekend with reasonable boundaries: I believe being overly restrictive can cause obsession over what’s forbidden and will backfire for both adults and children. (So will the “I deserve this!” mentality). As I often say, life’s lessons have taught me that #balanceisbetter.
On holidays and other special occasions, I recommend strategically choosing treats with some redeeming nutritional qualities, and making or purchasing them in a decisive volume so they are part of the big picture of wellness, rather than ongoing, nagging temptation once the initial strategic splurge has been enjoyed.
Popsicles are perfect for this because not only are they pre-portion controlled, but they’re so cold you have to savor them slowly! Homemade ones usually come with some family fun in the kitchen, and often with wholesome fruit, too. So go for it!
This week, I reached out to some of my foodie colleagues for their favorite #worthit popsicle recipes to help you celebrate the Memorial holiday weekend (even if you’re still in a school a little longer). Just click the images and scroll down for the recipes! Enjoy!
